It gets tricky with large bags – all dog foods spoil, it’s just a question of when, and we usually don’t even notice until our dogs start to vomit. Ideally you want to limit it to 6 weeks at an absolute max.

Hi Rachael, yes this has been the case for a while now – on and off unfortunately. Taste of the Wild is probably the most like for like alternative, so maybe that’s an option while Acana is out of stock?

Hi Stacey, the investigation into DCM was subsequently dropped due to inconclusive evidence.

Most grain-based pet foods are very significantly formulated with grain, often with very little meat. You don’t find dogs in the wild eating grains in any form except from the stomach contents of prey, so you can question that too.

It’s nothing but FULL of lentils and peas a dog does not need these at such quantities
How much lentils and peas and beans do you need in a dog food
You don’t find dogs in the wild eat lentils, peas and beans they are not designed to not at such quantities
Not good for dogs with allergies either or serious GERD problems
Dogs need some grain and meat sources not just dam lentils, and peas

Probably 50% more expensive previous food (Ivory Coat). Is it a bad to buy a large Bag – when it takes 3 months for my dog to eat this? It helps spread the cost, rather than buying smaller bags.

Hi Lark, the FDA investigation into grain free and Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy was eventually dropped due to lack of evidence. Unfortunately this was not before the matter was viralised. There’s some information on the matter here – https://www.petfoodjudge.com/grain-free-dog-foods-heart-problems/

There has actually been reports of the grain free not being good for heart health (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7433909/ and https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/29/us/dog-food-heart-disease-fda.html). There’s a high amount of peas and lentils which is suspected to be linked to this. Actually, any food high in peas and lentils I try to avoid because they are fillers and lack nutrients.

I feed my 2 year old schnauzer the acana healthy grains, which is limited in this. He’s very healthy, his fur his soft and his teeth are in great condition.

A couple things I like about the healthy grains mix:
-miscanthus grass, a healthy fiber (https://www.petbusiness.com/sponsored/the-breakthrough-fiber-that-s-revolutionizing-pet-nutrition/article_be105b8b-3ca7-5ff0-bac3-2ebf52f87699.html)
-fruits and veggies instead of chemical additives, healthier and higher in nutrients
-pollock oil, omegas are important, especially in younger pups (https://www.keepthetailwagging.com/salmon-oil-or-pollock-oil-for-dogs/)
-the lack of corn, peas, lentils, and beans, which have been questioned recently
