We’re currently doing a mix of Lyka and Royal Canin for our 14 week old medium Cobberdog pup because that’s what the breeder did. We’re keen to transition away from Royal Canin and I like the sound of Petzyo based on your other reviews but it’s not included here. Do you recommend it for puppies? I’ve also ordered some samples of Frontier Pets and Eureka but need to mix things up to be able to afford the good stuff.

However they both love (to my dismay) MY DOG!!! I have been feeding Ziwi Peak dry as treats. Also (even as I have been warned not to) chicken necks. When feeding the necks I am made to feel like a killer. I am so confused. Love my dogs. Wish I could trust these so called experts.

Could you please advise me of an alternative to Lyka, which I’m currently using for dinner on top of Blackhawk or Ziwi dry food. My puppy is a groodle.
Also, could you please recommend a dry food for my 7 year old English Springer who is overweight. Thank you so much.

Hi Margaret,

I suppose kibble offered a much simpler solution for all those decades when we didn’t realise how potentially flawed and unhealthy it can be – a convenience food, really!

There’s so much contradicting information these days, but I feel a good start is an emphasis on foods made from animal rather than starchy carbs, and variety is a good start.

For example, feeding a kibble as 80% of a diet, then giving your dog 20% fresh meat, organs, raw meaty bones, eggs, fish (like sardines or tuna), and perhaps some veggies or fruit if they like it.

Or feeding better foods if they are affordable, and still supplementing with fresh and healthy foods. Hopefully trying not to overthink! This video could be a good starting point – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8egM0Rq-pw&t=26s

At 82 i have had 7 dogs of various breeds and bitzers over the years including 2 German Shepherds (one at a time)The last was a min SChnauzer for 14 plus years that i thought i was feeding well. Now I have a 16 week min schnauzer also pedigree and thought i had it covered. The well known breeder put me on kibble with a welcome pack and advised i meal a day at 10am for a pup then 12 weeks. This was too wrong for me so i made it 3 times a day, but still not happy and after joining and reading the min schnauzer Facebook web site I was more confused than ever. So last week on my daughters advice ordered Lyka, feeding half and half but the cost is a worry. So i contemplated home preparation but did not feel confident about the ratios or if my know how and ingredients were healthy or enough. Your information is very informative although can i know enough? The more i research .the less i know..I just bought a large bag of Mars dry breeders recommendation. ( the big cartons at her gate should have been a clue) “welcome pack “I feel like giving it to my neighbour who feeds this brand to their Great Dane..It is such an important time in a dogs life and i am so conscious of the responsibility in every aspect and the impact on the dogs futurehealth.and how quickly time is passing. So even if i can feed the expensive food till he gets to adult stage.II’m happy to prepare the food, so many recipes, all different..This is my problem. It’s the amount of protein and veg and other necessary additives i’m confused about. NO carbs? Not brown rice? and how much offal,if any.Chicken or turkey? Raw or part cooked?Tuna in spring water? Boiled egg.The choices are endless. Is Omega 3? in sardines. apple ,carrot, bananas…? Big Dog raw patties. Best quality dry mixed half and half .Raw bones i can do..Behaviour? Like having a toddler. Times have changed. Crates, Play pens and “Barking”…and chases my cat…The naughty chair and time out. So mindful of catching him in the act ..not after…Its a whole new ball game My last dog was so easy. I cooked chicken every night, went for walks every day ….squirted him with the water spray when he barked, which was rare. Perhaps l’ve forgotten but he did have to have all his teeth out at 13! Didn’t like bones. Not what i’m aiming for but to live to see him grow up healthy and well behaved would be good. Thank you.
