Hi Helen, the weight gain is likely multifactorial – age and exercise related, and although Petzyo isn’t a bad food the gain could be related to carbohydrates from the legumes.

A simple solution, if it’s a possibility, is to split her diet between the Petzyo (dry food) and a wet patty or BARF made from lean meats like kangaroo or turkey. This effectively reduces the percentage of carbohydrates in the diet. Petzyo make raw patties but as they have a mix of meat and legumes you may favour Proudi which is all meat – available in many pet stores in the freezer section. Big Dog is another option, as are the Prime100 rolls which are easy to get hold with lean options.

Does that help?

I had my golden retriever on lifewise for a few years and thought it was great however she became sick very often and I thought I would try another food as upon looking online I found that there were reports of the food being mouldy Upon your recommendation. I tried Petzyo and she’s been on that now for about six months. She hasn’t been sick at all which has been fantastic. We like it however-she is 10 1/2 and now she has put on a lot of weight where she’s never been an overweight dog. She’s always been in really good shape so I have a feeling this is not the right food for her and as petzyo range is for every age I can’t try a different one. I’ve tried all of them and I’ve also reduced her food to half- it’s not making a difference. I think I’m going to have to change again
Would there be any reason why this particular food is made put on so much weight?

These reviews are very helpful! My senior dog has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and has become extremely fussy. We have trialled every kidney specific food in America and are finding it increasingly difficult to find a food that’s low in protein 30-41%, low in sodium, and low in phosphorous <1.2%. I'd love to see a guide to finding foods in America that are kidney safe, or tips and tricks to help dogs with CKD eat their kidney food (maybe with toppers?).

Thanks 🙂

Yep, ingredients change all the time, usually for the worse unfortunately.

Your research is for sure very helpful
