MERYL I see you are in Adelaide, can you let me know what vet you are seeing? I have a whippet diagnosed with EPI but even that is a guess until I get some scans. He is currently on Prime100 SPD Kangaroo, Pea and Algae and Turkey and Flaxseed, (mostly Kanga and a little of the other two) also he is taking one Creon 10k with each meal (3 meals a day) He is also on Protexin Cobalazorb and Serenicare. Plus Canineceuticals Gut Protect and Mushroom elixer. For joint health he takes Canineceuticals P.E.A (only a little) and Rosehip vitals. I have tried 4cyte and other products but he didn’t do well with those as they caused diarrhea. I keep his cals low so he can get treats and so far he is okay with shark cartilage, egg whites and berries. After a month he has improved drastically and he can now walk an hour a day (2 to 3 shorter walks combined) and a couple of swims down the river. The only thing I still have trouble with is his constant hunger and that is why I have started to add turkey prime to increase the fat. So now I am considering adding some Life Wise Biotic – Low Fat dry food to see if that will help with the hunger. I am looking at going back to the vet to check the bloods again as the problem we had was that with each one the levels were higher with every test so I am hoping that after eight weeks on his current regime the levels will be better and if not then a scan. But my current vet can’t do anymore as they feel they don’t have enough knowledge about the situation so I am on the lookout for a new vet here in South America.

Just check the fat percentage of any fish diet, dry or wet. That is what gave my Caboodle chronic pancreatitis in the first place – I think it was about 18% fat. My vet says to aim for under 10% fat. Probiotics really helped my dog too.

My 11yr old boxer has pancreatitis. We give her a single protein roll and single protein kibble. She is allergic to poultry so our options are limited. She had antibiotics and was all better but her symptoms have returned. Clearly we need to adjust her diet.

Hi Rainy, some prescription diets from Hills/RC are not recommended for feeding for longer than a given period, such as 6 months, but this can be product specific – always worth checking.

In my opinion any dry food comprised significantly of grains or similar alternatives wouldn’t be a good long term solution for any dog, specifically one suffering issues such as pancreatitis. This would be more the case with RC dry than RC wet.

My 10 year old toy poodle cross has pancreatitis. He went to the vet for a routine blood test, as we were planning to do a dental clean, but his amylase was double the highest recommended (he hasn’t been showing any symptoms of pain or pancreatitis). He has been on the royal canin gastrointestinal low fat wet food for quite a while.

You mentioned royal canin is not an ideal long term solution – are you able to let me know why? I will look into lyka.
