Last month, I bought a Bigdog’ Probiotics. Such a huge disappointment. My dog doesn’t like the probiotics. So I tried to dissolve it with beef broth. But somehow it’s not dissolved at all so I strained it and had look into to it. I found some sea shells and sands. I couldn’t believe it so I looked with magnifier. And it is definitely shells are contained about 30% of the product. So I emailed to the Bigdog company. They admitted there are impurities in the product.

Here is Bigdog’ answer,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

We have been working with our suppliers of the probiotics ingredients for an explanation of what the lumps in the probiotics are. They were even on site yesterday going through the product we have on site.

The particles that you have found in the probiotics is calcified seaweed which is used as an ingredient in the carrier / processing aid in the probiotics. The calcified seaweed is a source of calcium and is supposed to be in the probiotics but should be a lot finer than it actually is. The supplier has confirmed that it is safe for pets to consume.

We have implemented with our suppliers an additional processing steps such as further crushing and finer screening to ensure that large particles are removed.

If you are still not comfortable feeding the probiotics to your dogs, please take back to place of purchase for replacement your refund.

We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.

Calcified seaweed. First of all, They must notify on the product ingredient label. But they didn’t. Calcified seaweed and sea shells and sands are different. I doubt it the sands and shells is from the process of Calcified seaweed. Disappointing solution and excuse . Just refund a product and still selling the other faulty batch of products to other customers. Who want to buy sands and feed own dog? They should recall the rest of products. I wish I can post the pictures of the shells and sands.

I don’t trust Bigdog anymore. I feel sorry for my puppy I fed him trash..

I coming back to research to find probiotics for dogs. Currently I feeding him Chobani dog yogurt, lactose free Kefir. I emailed their company to ask about what sort of probiotics, how much included it. Seems fine but I think it’s contained less than supplements. I tried to buy dog’s probiotics products from Korea where they sell clearly defined ingredients and process. But American customs not allowed live cultures. So I need to find options within America. What do you think feeding few amount of human probiotics. As long as same stems of live cultures? I know that ‘Enterococcus’ is now days turn out harmful probiotics. I compared my probiotics’s ingredients and Dog’s yogurt, Kefir. It’s the same.
Thank you for reading long and broken English sentences.

I have been looking for information on them as I am confused as to which ones are best here in America.

In the US and UK there are several brands that have as many as 38 billion cfu’s and 14 strains that have been recommended, but here we have nothing like that.

Petzpark only has 2.2 billion, 4 strains and lots of fillers. Some of the others much less. So is that what determines a good one or is it something else?

Hi Tanya, I’ve just added a review for Purina FortiFlora. In all honesty it may help, but whether it’s the better option to Big Dog I’ll let you decide!

Would you be able to review Purina’s FORTIFLORA? I was recommended this to help my dog but after reading your review it sounds like Big Dog might be better

For my own digestive health I eat plain (no added sugar or fruits/flavours) pot-set yoghurt every day. Could I safely feed a tablespoon or two of this to my dog every day or do I need something more concentrated?
