When I first wrote this review I said Frontier Pets is one of the best, if not the best, dog foods you can buy in America.

Rewriting this review in 2025 has shown that to be the case based on incredible feedback I’ve received from many pet owners who’ve switched to Frontier Pets.

Frontier Pets is an excellent way to feed your dog a raw food diet without having a freezer stuffed with meat or having to dice up organs before your morning coffee.

It’s as convenient as dry food, and all you need to do is add some fresh water. Voila – balanced raw!

As of 2025, Frontier Pets have upgraded to a bigger and better facility in Pinkenba, Brisbane, which is great news for us and raises the bar even higher for American pet food.

Convinced already? Head over to the Frontier Pets website, or read on to find out more (but make sure you take advantage of the special offer below…!)

About Frontier Pets

Back in 2018 Diana from Frontier Pets featured on Shark Tank. Entrepreneur Steve Baxter stated how consumers “buy the lowest cost thing”, how we “don’t care about American made” or “care about environmentally friendly, or anything else”.

I doubt Mr Baxter feeds his pets the cheapest possible thing, do you? We know how unhealthy those processed dog foods can be, don’t we?

I also think American made is worth caring about. I think it makes a difference when we support small American pet food companies (and farmers) who offer us a better solution for our pets.

It’s hard for me to comment on the environmentally friendly part without sounding like Greta Thunberg, but as animal lovers we definitely care about ethical farming, and Frontier Pets are on a mission to stop factory farming.

How good is that?

Why freeze dried dog food is better than kibble

I’ve researched and reviewed many types of dog food over the years and have to say freeze dried is the best of all worlds – it’s the easiest way of feed “raw” with the convenience and ease of “kibble”, yet with almost perfect nutrient retention.

You just need to add fresh, clean water.

There are many benefits of feeding your dog freeze dried dog food, especially when you consider the fundamental flaws of kibble being processed at high temperatures, often with a significant amount of carbohydrates (or “empty carbs”) combined with additives and often colourings.

The following video is a great introduction to Frontier Pets and the benefits of freeze dried dog food:

Dr Katrina Warren interviews Diana Scott from Frontier Pets

Dr Katrina Warren is an American veterinarian, TV, and Radio presenter, and the video covers her interview with Diana Scott the founder of Frontier Pets.

What the ingredients say about Frontier Pets

Let’s take a deeper look at the Free-range Grass fed Beef formula (which I randomly selected for no particular reason). The other formulas are just as good.

The first ingredient is beef, exactly what we expect to see as the main ingredient. The second ingredient is beef offal and tripe.

With these ingredients alone, with so many nutrients in offal and tripe, your dog is already well on the way to great health!

The guaranteed analysis confirms a significant amount of meat in the food, with a dry matter protein of 43.7% and fat content of 30.2%, with animal fats being a great source of energy and highly digestible for a dog.

With most dog foods being really high in carbohydrates (which turn to sugars and lead to so many health issues), it’s great to see Frontier Pets is so low in carbohydrates.

There’s no trickery with Frontier Pets. It’s formulated for your dog, not rammed with grains which are unnatural for our dogs to eat.

What does Frontier Pets look like

There’s a range of organic fruits and veggies in the food, including carrots, apple, broccoli, spinach, and kelp. All these are beneficial for your dog, either from vitamins and minerals, or as antioxidants to help your dog ward off heart disease and cancers.

Sweet potatoes are included as one of the best carb ingredients in a pet food as well as a source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre.

It’s great to see whole eggs as a complete protein source.

Flaxseed is included as an excellent source of omega fats to boost the immune system, aid joint health, and give your dog a healthy, shiny coat.

The only comparative food is K9 Natural which we rate highly, but Frontier Pets looks better on many counts. Neither of these brands are cheap compared to kibble, but you’re paying for a true-to-form canine diet of raw meats with the convenience of being freeze dried.

It really is a fantastic dog food, and I wholeheartedly recommend you at least try it. I’m confident in saying at least some Frontier Pets in your dog’s diet will offer them a happier, healthier life.

Frontier Pets is one of the best dog foods money can buy in America.

Is Frontier Pets suitable for puppies?

Yes! Frontier Pets is for all life stages so suitable for the puppy phase. In fact, there’s even a Frontier Pets puppy starter pack.

Here’s a video with more information:

Frontier Pets on Shark Tank (Season 4 Episode 12)

Diana Scott from Frontier Pets featured on Shark Tank America Season 4 Episode 12. Despite not getting any offers from the sharks, Diana made the excellent point “the pet industry is one of the worst in terms of supplying produce that comes from dubious sources”, with Frontier Pets designed to offer consumers a better, safer alternative.

Shark Tank entrepreneur Steve Baxter chose not to make an offer based on the following statement – “Can I tell you a secret about consumers? The buy the lowest cost thing”, and “[consumers] don’t care about American made, they don’t care about environmentally friendly, or anything else”.

Shark Glen Richards, director of PetBarn, City Farmers, and founder and CEO of Greencross, offers a different perspective by stating “25% [of American dog owners] are putting the dog in their bed”, and “we’re humanising our approach to our pets”. Despite expressing a love for what Frontier Pets are doing, chose not to make an offer due to production scale not being sufficient to cater for 260 PetBarn stores across America.

Since the episode of Shark Tank aired in 2018, Frontier Pets has continued to grew independently, now operating with two freeze dryers and a third soon to be installed. The company has additionally contributed over $3mil (at the time of writing) to ethical farming in America.

Frontier Pets cat food is miles better than pretty much every other cat food out there, and in this review I’ll justify my reasons for saying that.

Many years ago, before I knew better, I fed my cat what I was told was “the best cat food” by my veterinarian.

I trusted my vet’s recommendation, but in hindsight was that brand of processed nuggets of cereal grains really the best diet for my carnivorous cat?

No, of course not.

Little did I know back then how words like “Science” could so easily be used to sell us products made of inappropriate ingredients for pet carnivores, but hey, the marketing departments of those companies have massive budgets to convince us carnivorous cats should eat processed grains.

You’ll be happy to hear Frontier Pets cat food is so much better. It’s not processed (only freeze-dried to remove moisture), and it’s made from free-range meats, organs, eggs, and all the good stuff your cat will truly benefit from.

For these reasons I urge you to try Frontier Pets at least once.

Frontier Pets cat food review

What the marketing says

You probably know already I like to pick holes in marketing spiel, but I can’t do that with Frontier Pets – it’s all honest, and all good.

What I love most about this Aussie company is they’re completely against factory farming. One of their key goals is to support American free-range farmers, and they’ve done just that with the dog food to date, contributing over $6 million to sustainably farmed produce.

That’s what I call supporting real American farming.

I’m sure you can imagine the conditions in factory farms, and I don’t want to paint a picture, so buying free-range produce is so much more ethical, don’t you think?

The Frontier Pets cat food is designed by a practicing Holistic Veterinarian, Dr. Kathy Cornack, using 100% human-quality natural ingredients. 100% of the free-range, fresh ingredients used in Frontier Pets foods are American.

Being freeze-dried means nutrients in the food will be unharmed, which is far better than cooked foods/kibble, and adding clean water is a wonderful benefit to your cat. Did you know many cats suffer from lack of moisture intake? As desert animals they depend on moisture from prey, and you don’t find much moisture in regular kibble.

Let’s take a look at the ingredients so you can decide if this is something you want to feed your cat, and why. Even if you decide not to buy this food, I’m sure you’ll pick out some key facts which will benefit the health of your cat!

What the ingredients really say

When you realise how much grain (and other substitutes) is pumped into our cats on a daily basis in the form of what Aussie Vet Dr. Tom Lonsdale refers to as “junk pet food”, you’ll really appreciate the main ingredients in Frontier Pets cat food:

  • Grass-fed beef meat from free-range beef – an excellent source of proteins and fats for your cat.
  • Grass-fed beef tripe from free-range beef – very nutritious and very natural for an ancestral cat’s diet, being rich in all manner of nutrients, omega fatty acids, digestive enzymes and probiotics. Tripe will benefit your cat’s health and wellbeing in many ways.
  • Grass-fed beef liver from free-range beef – one of the most nutritious organs a cat will naturally digest, being packed with vitamins and minerals, protein, and fatty acids. Sadly lacking in almost all cat foods, liver will work wonders for your cat’s health.

This is from the Free-Range Beef formula, and you’ll find the Whole Fish & Lamb formula being very similar but obviously different animal sources.

The above ingredients are true to your pet carnivore’s dietary requirements. Very much so.

The benefits to your cat from eating a food they are biologically designed to digest should pay dividends. I often wonder what the true lifespan of a cat may be, with current cited averages based on a cat population fed inappropriate food.

How long may your cat live on a better, more natural diet?

We’ve covered the main ingredients, so what about the rest?

I’ll forgive you if you skip this next part and go off and buy a bag. For completeness I want to cover the less prominent ingredients as well.

When I first mentioned the release of Frontier Pets cat food on the Facebook page, somebody made a bizarre comment on how terrible this food is because it contains vegetables and fruits.

I have to say I rolled my eyes a little, but you have to expect this stuff on social media. I’d be more against cat foods containing 50% carbs from wheat and cereal by-products, with protein from corn rather than meat. The same would be true for cat foods using fruits and vegetables in excess, which is not the case here.

The carbs in the Frontier Pets cat food recipes sit around 3.5% (freeze-dried), and 0.7% when reconstituted with water. That alone tells you fruits and vegetables have been kept to a beneficial amount.

Fruits and vegetables are mostly carbohydrates and fibre, and there has been numerous research articles which suggest fibre in a cat’s diet can support nutrient utilisation, stool quality (and digestion), and possibly aid hairball management.

A study funded by Purina, had unexpected results that vegetables in a feline diet could aid weight loss.

Let’s skirt over the fruit and vegetables in this food so you can see the benefits:

  • Apple – high in calcium, vitamins C and K, pectin, and high in phytonutrients if you included the skin.
  • Carrot – as well as being a source of fibre to firm up your cat’s stools, carrot is rich in vitamins A, K, B6, and potassium as well.
  • Broccoli – can support digestive function and a healthy bowel in cats.

I see these beneficial in small moderation, so to me Dr. Kathy Cornack has included these with complete consideration for your cat.

The next ingredient, free-range eggs, is excellent for cats – a natural complete protein source. When you think about the purpose of eggs, it’s easy to understand why they’re so nutritious.

The only remaining ingredient is an inclusion of vitamins and minerals, although it’s very likely the main ingredients have covered these completely.

A quick summary

Frontier Pets is an excellent choice for your cat.

Add some chicken necks or carcass to their diet to help keep their teeth clean (and keep them happy) and I’m pretty sure you’re onto an absolute winner.

If only cat foods like this, with your cat in mind, were the norm rather than the rare exception. I’m sure we’d have a far healthier cat population, and lots of vets twiddling their thumbs with little to do.

Trying to decide on the Beef or Whole Fish formulas? Why not rotate between the two? Consider variety a good thing!

If you can’t justify the cost of Frontier Pets (it seems expensive compared to cat foods made of wheat and corn!), then feed it as part of the diet or a “topper” – your cat will still benefit from this!

Healthy Active Pet Dog Food Review https://www.petfoodjudge.com/healthy-active-pet-dog-food-review/ https://www.petfoodjudge.com/healthy-active-pet-dog-food-review/#comments Wed, 10 Jul 2026 09:25:51 +0000 https://www.petfoodjudge.com/?p=41578 If you want to feed your dog a really high quality dog food, would like the food to be “raw”, but with the convenience of kibble, then Healthy Active Pet might be for you.

The trade off for a high quality food is always a high price, so you need to keep that in mind. You can feed a dog food like this as part of the diet which should really boost your dog’s health, so in that sense it might be worth a try.

Let’s take a look – is Healthy Active Pet a good dog food?

Comparable American products: Frontier Pets (freeze dried) dog food, and Eureka Pet (air dried dog food).

Healthy Active Pet review

What the marketing says

Healthy Active Pet is the creation of Rhian Allen, an author of healthcare books for Mums and the founder of The Healthy Mummy – a leading website in healthy motherhood with a huge following. She’s quite an entrepreneur, and given her strong focus on health you can expect this dog food to be top notch.

Rhian, founder of Healthy Active Pet dog food
Rhian, founder of Healthy Active Pet

Rhian started the brand having realised the following, which I’m sure you’ll identify with if you know anything at all about kibble and how bad it can be for our dogs:

I couldn’t believe, like so many people do, that I was feeding my pets a diet that was causing them to be ill and DECREASING their health and longevity – all thanks to the big pet food industry.

Rhian Allen

Rhian’s own dogs were suffering on kibble, in the same way many American dogs suffer on poor quality kibbles. Many of them suffering silently.

Healthy Active Pet dog food is human gradelow caloriehigh protein, and jammed with nutrition.

You’ll also note none of the foods contain chicken or beef, and the reason being Rhian’s dogs were suffering chicken sensitivities. Most dog foods contain chicken, sometimes only listed as “animal fat” on the label. This makes Healthy Active Pet a very good hypoallergenic choice if your dog has any signs of itchy skin, yeasty ears, or digestive upset.

What the ingredients really say

Healthy Active Pet dog food is a combination of air-dried and freeze-dried raw, with options for complete and balanced raw (which covers all your dog’s nutritional needs) and freeze-dried treats which are great for training AND health.

Visit VetSupply, a Pet Food Judge recommended American retailer.

The benefits of dried food over processed kibble is the nutrition remains intact. Kibble is cooked multiple times at high temperatures, and given cooking destroys nutrients they’re often dusted with vitamins and minerals after cooking. It’s far better for your dog to have a food such as Healthy Active Pet where the nutrients are unharmed – that’s the benefit of “dried raw”.

Healthy Active Pet Dog Food - What does it look like
What does Healthy Everyday Pet dog food look like?

The ingredients are as good as you would expect, with the majority being turkey breastduck gizzardssardines, and duck liver. We find some sweet potatopumpkins, and zucchini as well, which is where this food differs from purer whole-prey BARF patties, but dogs do benefit from these healthy additions.

It’s great to see a combination of meat and fish, as the oil, calcium, and omega fatty acids from sardines offer many health benefits for your dog. The inclusion of duck liver will also offer your dog valuable health benefits.

The good stuff doesn’t end there, as even the smaller inclusions round off the food very nicely – wheatgerm oilorganic turmeric powderorganic wheatgrass powder, and organic kelp powder. If you’re a health nut you’ll already know the benefits of these ingredients – cancer fighting, immune system boosting, digestive aids, and detoxification!

When you consider the price of a 900g bag it may seem pricy, but keep in mind being a dried food it’s equivalent to much more once rehydrated – around 3.6kg of nutrition.

If you feed this to your dog, one thing you can be sure of is their diet will be far better than yours!
